There was great excitement when the first endangered hihi eggs hatched at Wanganui's Bushy Park on Saturday.
Native hihi (stitchbirds) exist in just eight protected populations in New Zealand.
Predator-free bush at Bushy Park, 25km from Wanganui, is the latest of those. Forty-four young birds were transferred there from Tiritiri Matangi Island in March.
The first three chicks to hatch were in a nest of four eggs, and the fourth egg in it hatched on Monday.
Forest and Bird staff member Chris Devine lifted the lid of their nest box to get a photograph of the first three when they were just a few days old.
