A man who pushed his partner up against a wall and held her by the throat will be sentenced in October.

Manuel Hohepa Wynyard was at home with the victim on June 20 when they began arguing, police prosecutor Sergeant Rachel Willemsen told the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.

The victim walked away, but Wynyard followed and grabbed her by the throat, pushing her into the hallway wall, Ms Willemsen said.

The victim struggled with Wynyard, and when he let her go she went into the kitchen.

Wynyard followed, kicking a nearby chair before kicking the victim in the shin.

He yelled to one of the children present to get in the car as they were leaving, and the child got in the car.

The victim said she would call the police as she didn't want Wynyard to take the child.

In response, Wynyard hit the windscreen of the car, shattering it while the child was still inside.

The child suffered no injuries, Ms Willemsen said.

The victim took the child out of the car, but when she picked up a phone she got into a struggle with Wynyard over it.

Wynyard pleaded guilty in court to male assaults female.

Judge David Cameron remanded him to October 11 for sentencing.
