Lawn bowls is still alive and well in eastern Whanganui as the Gonville Bowling Club enters its 107th year.
Club president Brian O'Dea said the club was strengthened last year when a number of ladies transferred from the Gonville Women's Bowling Club closed its doors.
"When that closed it not only increased our membership, but also gave us some very good new committee members who participate in all our activities," O'Dea said.
"The activities include bingo and cards every Tuesday afternoon during the winter months, short mat indoor bowls also over winter and housie on the last Friday night of each month followed by a pot luck dinner."
Summer bowls began last Saturday and along with club championships and tournaments, there are roll ups every Wednesday and Saturday beginning at 1pm.
"We appreciate the Castlecliff Bowling Club is striving to get to its centennial celebrations in 2018, so we have invited their members to participate in our Gonville roll ups, paying a minimal green fee," o'Dea said.
