Horizons Regional Council is asking homeowners to ensure their log fires are working properly ahead of this winter's cold weather.

A factsheet released by the council noted that use of the wrong materials, incorrect installation, and lack of maintenance could affect a fire's efficiency, costing the homeowner money or even damaging their health.

An inefficient fire can also affect local air quality.

•The council recommends people do the following:
•Insulate your home to prevent heat loss;
•Burn dry firewood only, as it burns cleaner;
•Have your chimney swept every year;
•Don't burn treated wood, household waste or food scraps in your fire.
