Don McGlashan will perform in Wanganui on Friday night, as noted in yesterday's Chronicle.
He's not New Zealand's most famous singer-songwriter, but he certainly deserves recognition as one of this country's best and most under-rated.
Like Dave Dobbyn, McGlashan made his name 30 years ago in a noisy, young band, then did some quirky stuff, some serious stuff, some solo stuff, all fine examples of Kiwi music.
But little of it was quite poppy enough, or alternative enough for that matter, to penetrate the mass consciousness.
That said, you'll know the Mutton Birds' remake of Nature, and doubtless you'll recognise Anchor Me and the Hollie Smith-sung Bathe In The River. And perhaps you'll consider Dominion Road a classic. Let's hope all are on the set list this Friday.
McGlashan, who has professed a "real soft spot" for Wanganui, has promised songs from past and present. We're lucky to get a musician of this calibre visiting.
Treat yourself, this New Zealand Music Month, to a top gig in our town.
