Free blood pressure checks in Whanganui

In recognition of national Stroke Week, free blood tests will be available around Whanganui on Saturday October 7.

To raise awareness about the danger of high blood pressure the Stroke Foundation are setting up 200 testing stations throughout the country.

Blood tests in Whanganui will be available at New World on Victoria Ave and Pak'n Save on Glasgow Street.

Last year, more than 16,000 people got their blood pressure checked and this year the Foundation aims to reach over 20,000 New Zealanders.

Of those tested last year, one in ten were referred to their GP because of a high blood pressure reading.

In a follow up participants survey, 51 per cent said they were now taking action to better control their blood pressure

Stroke Foundation chief executive Mark Vivian said high blood pressure was sometimes called the "silent killer" and for good reason.

"A person with high blood pressure is up to seven times more likely to have a stroke than someone with normal or low blood pressure," Mr Vivian said.

He said the Stroke Foundation was grateful New World, Pak'n Save, St Johns Club, Wellington Free Ambulance, Rotary and stroke clubs were able to help and support.

The awareness week will run from Monday October 2 to Sunday October 8.
