Fifteen windsurfers from Whanganui and Manawatu prayed to the winds and were answered on an epic 34km surf from Waitotara down to the Whanganui river mouth on Saturday afternoon.
The expedition was a collaboration between local windsurfers and those affiliated with the Wind Warrior Kitesports shop and school at Foxton Beach.
Whanganui's Reece Dix said this weekend had been the only time they could organise a bus for everyone to take them up to South Taranaki, so fortune smiled with the big gusts available. "You hope and pray the wind is going to be there. It was more than what we needed."
After departing around lunchtime, the group first made landfall at Kai Iwi beach for a rest and some food, before carrying on to Whanganui and arriving around 3.30pm.
Dix said the bodies were a little sore, but that was nothing they weren't expecting. The group is planning another long wind surf over summer, this one from a 50km journey from Foxton to Waikanae.
