The weeks march on and so does progress at the Repertory Theatre. On Sunday afternoon an afternoon tea for members past and present was well attended and the top floor of Wakefield Chambers was abuzz with energy and chatter. Sweet treats, cups of tea, and tasty savouries were downed amidst conversation about this beloved theatre's future.
Acting president Phil Portland opened the afternoon tea and addressed the company with an excellent talk about immediate plans for our upcoming move back into more familiar premises on 4 Ridgway St.
In recent months, the Wanganui District Council has overseen the erection of a false wall at the back of our auditorium at the cost of five seats. This has meant that the dangerously bowing back wall, which has caused so much upheaval, should no longer affect future productions, and we can now house future audiences with confidence. Similar building flaws have been remedied and the vermin infestation which has plagued us for so long is now safely under control.
Following Phil Portland's announcement of the impending shift back into our old premises, a collective eagerness filled the air.
Mr Portland remarked that our transition back into our old building would take place almost immediately, subject of course to available manpower.
On the subject of manpower, various lists were drawn up requesting updated contact details of all those who wished to take part in putting on shows, helping with working bees, and keeping up to date with Repertory goings on in general. Secretary Harmony May commented on the committee's willingness to keep all members and interested parties in the loop with regards to Repertory news.
The general spirit of the afternoon was one of a united front. Mr Portland commented that in the process of moving forward with the New Rep co-operation between all members would be the focus. This theatre's long-standing history in Whanganui has proved that come rain or shine, we can still manage to pull together and bring something fantastic to the stage, and that is exactly what we intend to do. After all the changes and setbacks we've had this year, we are confident that in short order we'll be back in full force.
We would like to thank everybody who helped out and attended Sunday's afternoon tea, which will no doubt prove to be a turning point in the theatre's history. Anybody willing to lend a hand can contact Phil Portland on 022 063 6280 or by emailing dilosrail@hotmail.com.
