If mother's day is about paying back mums for all they do to help their children, Whanganui teenager Jack Collier found the perfect gift.
Yesterday the 15-year-old bought his mum a flight with the Wanganui Aero Club. It was a chance for her to get behind the controls of a plane for the first time in more than 20 years.
Sian Collier, who works as a midwife, got her licence in 1996 in Cyprus but hadn't flown since. "I put everything on hold, as you do as a mum," she said. Instead, she put her energy and resources into supporting Jack as he learned to fly.
Jack has been learning to fly for more than five years, placed third in the Jean Batten Memorial Trophy last year, and is due to get his licence when he turns 16 in June.
"I just put my resources into him," Mrs Collier said. "As a mother you're sort of unconditional. Your job as a mother is 27-7 and as a midwife it's 24-7 - and as someone trying to get back into (flying) it is quite hard," she said.
