Moving Kowhai Park and 100 residential homes from Anzac Parade is one possibility Horizons Regional Council has considered as it works out how best to protect Whanganui from increasingly severe flooding.
But it will cost upwards of $23million and there are cheaper options, such as raising the height of stopbanks, or maybe doing nothing at all.
That's why Horizons river manager Ramon Strong and his team are in the city to canvas ideas and to gauge ratepayers' willingness to pay for flood protection.
The first of two public meetings was held last night with another planned for Monday at Whanganui Girls' College, starting at 7pm.
There will also be stalls at the River Traders' market over the next two Saturdays where people can hear from Horizons and have their say.
