Summer heralds the Gypsy Fair.
Synonymous with gypsy are the house-trucks and buses.
The fair, parked beside the Whanganui River, has been visiting Wanganui for the past 15 years.
From Taupo in September to Christchurch in May, and 38 towns and cities in between, the Gypsy Fair takes its wares to New Zealand: candle dipping, single engine aircraft and biplanes made from beer cans with propellers that turn in the wind, aluminium wineglass holders for al fresco dining, wheels estate for those who might want a change of lifestyle, reiki and kinesiology, essential oils, crystals, clothing, food, metalwork handcrafts, the usual sideshows of pony rides and entertainment for the children ? the no-pressure viewing and unique shopping outdoors continue to attract Wanganui locals.
Organiser Jim Banks has been travelling with the Gypsy Fair for 12 years.
"It's a laid-back family outing, and the fair is growing all the time.
"Our entertainment is free and the acts are professional."
Fiddlesticks and Double Trouble, who were an attraction at the Turakina Caledonia Games, entertained the shoppers and browsers on the fair's last day before they packed up and moved on.
