New branding, new headquarters and everything's at bargain prices.
That's what's happened with the makeover and relocation of the second-hand shop providing much needed funds for Wanganui-Manawatu Bird Rescue.
The shop had been operating out of premises next to Fern Lodge on Taupo Quay but has had to relocate because of planned redevelopment at that site.
Now the store is in its new home at 62 Taupo Quay (opposite the Wanganui Chronicle) and began trading there on the weekend.
Ella Grant, a spokesperson for the bird rescue organisation, said the new site did not enjoy the same amount of foot traffic on a Saturday as the previous one only because that was virtually next door to the Saturday riverside markets.
"But we're hoping to become better know through our new branding," Ms Grant said.
With the move has come a name change too. It used to be called the Garage Sale but "we're moving up market and have branded ourselves The Cheep Shop".
She said the store had made a "huge difference" to the day-to-day operation of the organisation.
"It means that our 'rescuer' Dawn Morton doesn't have to spend so much time applying for grants and fundraising.
"It had always been a very big burden for her but income from our shop has virtually paid for all of the food for the birds Dawn looks after," Ms Grant said.
All the goods in the store are second-hand and all have been donated.
People can drop off goods at 62 Taupo Quay or call 342 4747 or 327 3660 to have goods collected.
And Ms Grant said anyone who finds a sick or injured bird can call 345 5037 and someone from bird rescue will pick it up.
The Cheep Shop sells a wide range of goods including books, toys, clothing, household items, furniture, plants and pine cones.
Usual trading hours are 1-4pm Thursday and 9am-3pm on Saturdays but those times could be increased.
"If there's a market day on in the city or something happening on a Sunday we'll try and open to catch some more traffic," Ms Grant said.
