Whanganui Vintage Weekend does city proud.

Whanganui Vintage Weekend does city proud.

As a showcase Vintage Weekend has once again done Whanganui proud.

Thousands of people got in behind dozens of events spread throughout the long weekend in what is a celebration of summer, our heritage and just good fun.

From vintage cars and aeroplanes to dressing up in period costumes and dancing in the streets to live music, it was one cracker of a weekend.

It often rains on trolley derby day, but that just makes it more exciting as contraptions of varying sizes and shapes take on the thrilling Drews Ave track.

Of course it wasn't just Vintage Weekend that had the city bursting at the seams and accommodation at a premium.

The annual Ratana celebrations, two Cooks Classic athletics meetings, the annual Opera School and a country music festival ensured plenty of bums in beds also.

It is often said that Whanganui is a little off the beaten track, but we know how to have fun in what is without doubt New Zealand's most beautiful city. Coupled with our rich history we are the envy of many a provincial town.

Case in point: this weekend is the 154th running of the Highland Games at Turakina. Surely this must be the longest surviving event in the country of its type?

For those wanting something else the Gypsie Fair will be in town too, always a drawcard with its myriad of arts, crafts and entertainment.

And just around the corner the city again hosts La Fiesta – with some 70-plus events celebrating women and community.

It seems our secret is out. Whanganui is the place to be.

Our population is up 700 new citizens and our Saturday street poll found town overflowing with visitors.
