It's great news that Wanganui is set to host the finals of the 2012 IUM Jet Sprint World Series.
The announcement on Tuesday afternoon is one which will hopefully provide a boost to the spirits of those feeling a bit downhearted in the wake of Wanganui's failure to make it to the final three bids for the national cycling centre of excellence.
Whatever the reasons for that bid failing, it's important to remember that hosting a one-off event sporting is a completely different scenario.
Wanganui has already proven its ability to play host to big occasions, be it the Masters Games, or the events held as part of speed week, which will take place just a few weeks before the jet sprint finals.
Add in the Vero vintage car rally, which will also be held in Wanganui early next year, and its clear that despite what some of the naysayers may suggest, this city does have the ability to host significant events.
It's been said before, but it can now only be hoped that those working in the business and tourism sectors are prepared to make the most of the estimated 2000 spectators as well as all the people involved with the boats, when we host the jet sprint finals.
It's not just about putting on the best event we can at the time.
It's also about giving some thought to the positive word of mouth that successfully hosting these sorts of events can generate.
As a city, we cannot let these opportunities slip through our fingers.
