Two car collision on Great North Rd about 100 metres north of Virginia Rd

Two drivers were lucky to escape serious injury after a head-on crash on Great North Rd.

Whanganui police constable Rob Conder said a car pulling out of a driveway between Virginia Rd and Turere Pl and a vehicle travelling toward Whanganui collided just after 9am on Wednesday, July 18.

"Luckily it was a minor crash at low speed," Conder said.

"It was good that the driver travelling from the 70km/h zone [into the 50km/h zone] had slowed down and wasn't going fast."

It appeared that the driver of the car pulling out of the driveway had not seen the other vehicle.

A St John spokeswoman said one person with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance to Whanganui Hospital.

One lane of the road, which is part of State Highway 3, was blocked for a time.

Police said it was fortunate the driver travelling from the 70km/h zone into the 50km/h zone had slowed down.
