Conservation Department staff have battled six fires that burned 25 hectares of native forest in the Wanganui district.
The fires were still being investigated but DoC services manager George Taylor called on the public to obey the total fire ban in place on conservation land and within 1km of it.
The fires covered a 10-day period last month and were at Pipiriki on February 10, Ohura (15th), Jerusalem (16th), Parinui and Te Tuhi (17th) and Tangahoe on February 20.
They tied up helicopters and ground crews, cost money and resources and put precious native plants and animals at risk, Mr Taylor said.
With the dry weather continuing, the department is still on high alert.
