Efforts to make Wanganui a more cycle-friendly city are progressing, but the Whanganui Bicycle Users Group is hoping for more from the district council.
In a submission to the council's 10-year plan last week, group coordinator Lyneke Onderwater, said they appreciated the "cycle-friendly" initiatives the council had already adopted. These included a map of shared pathways and the purchase of two bikes for council staff to use around the city.
But Ms Onderwater said they hoped the council would budget for widening parking and cycle lanes, specifically in Victoria Ave and Wilson St. She said that, at the moment, vehicles often encroached on cycle lanes, creating safety issues.
And the users' group asked for more cycle parks around the city, as well as a separate cycleway along Mosston Rd and Montgomery Rd to link Castlecliff and Springvale suburbs.
"Currently this route is under-used due to a perceived danger [to cyclists]," she said.
