With new cycle paths to try Whanganui children are encouraged to get on their bikes - and know the road rules, Horizons Regional Council roadsafe co-ordinator Glenda Leitao says.
The Young Cyclist of the Year competition was held at Laird Park on Thursday. There were 32 children from 16 schools competing.
They had a lunch of sausages, then sat a theory test. Then it was on their bikes, with Whanganui Police school/community officers Paul Miller and Rob Conder watching.
They wanted the children to look around before turning, make correct hand signals, keep their balance while riding slowly and complete a U-turn in a small space.
The winners were Jack Overweel and Jemma Tan. They got trophies, and a $100 Whitcoulls voucher each.
