Driftwood will take on new dimensions at Castlecliff beach on Saturday.
A driftwood and sand sculpture competition, organised by Progress Castlecliff, is being held in front of the Duncan Pavilion. Registration for entry is at 2pm but those wanting to get creative with wood or sand can construct their sculptures at any time. Progress Castlecliff's Ellen Waugh was on the beach yesterday, and was busy tweaking the rules to help make the sculptures more stable.
"People can bring nails and screws, fasteners and bits of wire," she said.
"Relevant to the judging is that the less introduced material to keep the sculptures together, the better."
There are three categories in the competition: 10 years and under, open to all ages, and an added category - worth $100 - is for the oldest competitor. "We want to see Grandmas and Granddads come down and have a go, too," Mrs Waugh said.
