Motorists parking in Drews Ave and Taupo Quay will be happy with a Wanganui District Council decision to bring infringement fees in line with the rest of the city's on-street penalties.
The push for change was driven by Councillor Rob Vinsen who said the $40 parking fines in those two streets was usury because elsewhere parking over time costs only $12 (or $9 for prompt payment).
The council also decided to allow free parking in these pay-and-display meter spaces on Saturdays. Currently those parking fees apply Monday through to Saturday.
Mr Vinsen said he had fielded complaints about the $40 fines, and said it was causing anguish and annoyance among unsuspecting motorists and was a particularly bad welcome to the many visitors in the riverside area.
"I'm particularly concerned that this level of fine portrays Wanganui in a very poor light. Visitors gain a very negative impression and locals feel ripped off."
