The man said there was one house in the suburb that almost had a multi-coloured fence, because there were so many lighter patches where they had waterblasted graffiti off.
"Surely the council should be organising a form of prosecuting them, getting them off the street."
He had not seen so much tagging since about this time last year. He had called council to complain about the tagging, but it was still there two weeks later.
The council's senior parks officer Wendy Bainbridge said the Community Projects Team was on top of the problem.
"The incidence and size of graffiti vandalism has spiked recently and the team has been kept very busy on some very large jobs," she said.
"In particular, there has been a lot of graffiti in Puriri Street, the Gonville shopping centre and in Lorenzdale Park. While the team have removed a lot of it, it is possible that some areas have been re-tagged."
The Community Projects Team is responsible for graffiti removal in about 90 per cent of cases. Private contractors are engaged where a specialist methodology is required, such as working at height.
"Members of the public can report graffiti by ringing the Graffiti Hotline on 349 3144 or by filling out a 'Fix-it' form on www.wanganui.govt.nz All calls and details are recorded and passed onto the Community Projects Team for action. It is helpful if address details are specific," Ms Bainbridge said.
Graffiti removal is undertaken according to the council's Graffiti Management Strategy, which has an order of priority.
