Wanganui District Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the contentious cycleway from Upokongaro to the city, which is part of the national cycle trails network.
The matter was on the council table last week, with officers saying they would come back with recommendations once more consultation had been held with landowners in the area.
At issue is the concern of residents whose properties face the Whanganui River, between the Mateongaonga Stream bridge and Pauls Rd. The land in front of these properties is owned by the council and registered as a unformed road.
Putting the route there gets cyclists off State Highway 4, which the New Zealand Cycle Trail regards as a key safety issue.
The cycleway will be included in council's 10-year plan and design could start in the 2015-16 financial year.
