Concert on Quay part of final exam

Sarjeant On The Quay will be alive with the sound of music today.

Eight students from Whanganui UCOL's Certificate in Contemporary Music will be doing solo performances at the gallery, beginning at noon.

Programme co-ordinator Lizzie de Vegt said the performances would be part of the students' end-of-year assessments.

"The students have played in groups at places like the Riverside Bar, but this is definitely a solo assessment.

"It's a situation that the students might face once they've graduated, playing or singing on their own in a gallery or bar, so it's an opportunity to get them into that space."

Ms de Vegt said the music would be low key and would include soul, pop and reggae. All the students would be singing or playing guitar. Two other students will do their solo assessment at UCOL because their chosen instrument, drums, were not appropriate for Sarjeant On The Quay, Ms de Vegt said.

She said it was the first time the music students had played at Sarjeant On The Quay.

"It's a new partnership for us and we're hoping to make further connections in the future," she said.

Entry to the concert is free.
