A National Park Community Board member is challenging the way the board's meetings are recorded, citing public transparency.
At the board's meeting on October 24, John Chapman attempted to change the board's standing orders (the rules under which meetings operate) so that in future minutes of meetings would include elected members' discussion as well as the decisions made.
"There needs to be a record of how we make decisions and that needs to be available for the general public to see," Mr Chapman told the Chronicle.
"It's not just an issue for us - a lot of councils have the same issue. The discussion and debate that informs decisions isn't there in the minutes. It reduces accountability and works towards the disengagement people feel with local government generally. People need to understand how they are being governed and how elected members are making decisions."
Mr Chapman said three of the five board members voted in favour of his resolution to change the standing orders to include discussion that occurred at meetings. However, the motion was lost as 75 per cent of members need to agree for standing orders to be amended.
