One person had to be assisted out of one of the cars. No other occupants of the two cars was injured.

One person has been taken to hospital and two cars are written off after a crash at a central Whanganui intersection.

Both cars ended up side by side, off the road and in between two traffic light poles when the crash happened at London and Grey streets at about 3pm on Friday.

One person was assisted out of the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to hospital to be checked up on.

None of the occupants of the other vehicles were injured.

A police officer at the scene trying to manage the intersection described the traffic as 'bedlam'.

Both police and Fire and Emergency worked together to manage the traffic and pedestrian crossings while a tow truck took the damaged cars away.
