Ruapehu District Council is seeking expressions of interest from people who may want to run a coffee cart by the reserve area and public toilet in Waiouru on SH1.
Since the opening of the new public toilets; which were designed to reflect the look of the army museum, the reserve area around the toilets has become very popular as a rest and picnic area for travellers.
Rebecca van Orden, council's property team leader, said council was surprised at how popular the reserve area had become for travellers taking a break.
"The location is in a high volume area and council believes this presents a good opportunity for someone wanting to deliver an additional service to the area. So we're looking for an operator who would be willing to assist keep the reserve area tidy as part of their agreement with council," she said.
Ms van Orden said long term the council will be developing the reserve area further with the addition of playground equipment which should add to its popularity.
