Musicians throughout the country know and appreciate the respect we show for artistic achievement in jazz music.
The jazz community in Whanganui comprises not only those who enjoy listening to the music, but also those who enjoy playing it. On Sunday you will have a chance to hear some wonderful music played by our very own musicians when we proudly present a concert featuring the two vehicles that have dominated jazz music performance - the big band and the combo.
First up will be the River City Big Band, directed by Gavin Herdman and populated by many familiar faces that you see around town. This is a community band where musos from all walks of life join together to celebrate their passion for performing this great music. The band had a fine time entertaining a full house at the Manawatu Jazz Club just last month, and you can expect to hear the blending of some wonderful voices in a repertoire of classic tunes.
Following on will be Jazz Connection, a collaboration that illustrates how jazz and blues are part of the same great musical tradition. On one side you have the harmonic inventions of Angela Crawford on the electric piano, and on the other the melodic brilliance of guitarist Fred Loveridge. Add to that the dynamic rhythms laid down by Michael Franklin-Browne and the solid bass of Murray Loveridge, and you have a platform for the vocals of Denise McNeill and Ash Mayor.
This show is part of our regular club schedule, with doors opening as usual at 5.30 at the RSA (St Hill St). Members pay only $10. Non-members are welcome paying $20. Memberships are available at the door. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
