The people of Wanganui are donating goods to help the Christchurch community.
Wanganui Civil Defence has come to the rescue with 10,000 face masks for the Canterbury University students who are volunteering in the liquefaction clean-up in earthquake-stricken Christchurch.
Civil Defence senior officer Alan Perfect said the organisation was responding to the urgent request and they were able to supply them.
Mr Perfect said the masks were bought for the Wanganui District Council staff in the event of a pandemic, but they were not required.
"We had the supply on hand for previous planning."
Wanganui woman Joy Clark was contacted through Facebook by Canterbury University student Matt who requested SARS face masks and household gloves.
"Those things were like gold last September as liquefaction plus sewage equals less workers as many weren't prepared," Matt said.
"Once again, thanks," he said, after a hard day in the suburbs digging and wheelbarrowing away the toxic, solidified clay.
Wanganui business Unipac has also responded to the students' request for gloves and, next week, the 10,000 pairs of gloves and masks will be couriered by Fastway Wanganui to Christchurch.
The Wanganui Cancer Society has donated $200 worth of Fastway Courier Wanganui tickets and other Fastway tickets from outside Wanganui have been donated, which Graham and Denise Clarke said they would honour.
Mrs Clark said she had received an anonymous donation of a further 100 SARS masks yesterday afternoon.
The masks are more robust than paper masks.
Quay Copying is printing A4 labels for every box couriered in the next six weeks.
Mrs Clark said the boxes would be couriered to the Red Cross who would deliver them to the students.
