The generosity of a school and local businesses has created a special memorial in Queen's Park, Wanganui.
A field of remembrance has appeared on the lawn in front of the Sarjeant Art Gallery and it will be re-appearing several times over the next four years, as the city joins the nation in commemorating the centenary of World War I.
There are 514 crosses bearing the names of service personnel from the city and district who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War. A plaque beside them explains the significance of the rows of simple white crosses.
Wanganui RSA vice-president Ted Morris said the display could not have happened without the generosity shown by Wanganui Collegiate School, which made a donation of about $1200, along with city businesses that chipped in.
Mr Morris said Eastown Timber provided the wood for the crosses, which were made and painted by the Corrections Department. KiwiSpan donated the steel pins to fix the crosses in place and Sign Engravers made the plaque.
