Strong westerly gales whipped through Wanganui and surrounding districts on Saturday, cutting power and damaging buildings.
Wanganui escaped major damage from the 96km/h winds, and the Wanganui Fire Service attended only a couple of callouts.
Senior station officer Doug Bennett said part of Taupo Quay and Wilson St were closed to traffic for 45 minutes after roofing started coming off the top of The Warehouse building just after mid-day on Saturday.
"The roads were closed so that we could gather up the roofing material safely," Mr Bennett said.
He said the only other weather-related call-out was around 2.15pm to a house on St John's Hill which had received minor damage from the wind.
