It is taking time but the message is getting through to Wanganui drivers about using the proper child restraints in their motor vehicles.
That has been borne out in another of the combined Whanganui Police, Plunket and Horizons checkpoints on two of the city's busiest streets yesterday.
Glenda Leitao, Horizons Regional Council Roadsafe co-ordinator, said it was the third "restraint day" held in Wanganui this year and the message was around the need for people to buckle up and make sure children were using the proper restraints.
Ms Leitao said police were also checking proper seatbelt use, warrants of fitness and vehicle registration. The checkpoints went up in London St in the morning and Somme Parade in the afternoon.
She said Wanganui drivers "have a bit of an issue" about seatbelts and far too many were forgetting to buckle in.
