Genuine opportunities came out of last week's meetings with Chinese business people and politicians, Rangitikei Mayor Andy Watson says.
Mr Watson went to Melbourne with Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith to present at the Australasian China Cities business forum, before returning with some of the Chinese to meet with some of the region's businesses.
"We need to engage with the Chinese, they're our principal trading partner," Mr Watson said. "We're a small island nation and we survive by being able to trade."
The presentation focused on potential opportunities in Rangitikei and the wider region, especially in agriculture.
Back in New Zealand there was a civic reception before a Dragon's Den-style meeting and breakfast with local businesses the following morning.
