Aramoho Playcentre's 35th birthday was celebrated at the weekend with cake and shared memories.

Centre co-ordinator Kim Balsom said past and present members were invited to come along and reminisce on Saturday.

"We had a cake, speeches, and a shared kai. People had brought along early photos they had taken from the centre."

Mrs Balsom said the centre opened in 1979 because of a perceived need in the area.

"Families were having to take their kids across town to go to a playcentre," she said.

Mrs Balsom is an early childhood teacher, but says the centre is managed and run by parents.

"The parents really get involved. They are what keeps the place running."

She said about 25 families were currently involved with the centre, but there was room for more.

The centre also runs courses on parenting.

"They're unique to us, and they are quite popular."
