The Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre has scooped a national award.
The Maria Place facility picked up the community innovation award at New Zealand's Sustainable Business Network Awards in Auckland on Tuesday.
The awards, which have run for 12 years, recognise and celebrate businesses that have committed to sustainability and the Resource Recovery Centre was one of four finalists.
Located at what used to be a prison facility, it uses buildings and land that had been vacant for more than 10 years.
Opened in August 2013 at a cost of $735,000 to build, the centre offers a 24-hour drop-off facility for people wanting to dispose of recyclables and incorporates environmental education, through an education room and the Sustainable Whanganui office.
