Central Whanganui street cleared of tree branches brought down by truck collision

Fallen tree branches have been cleared of a central Whanganui street after a truck brought them down onto the road.

Whanganui District Council general manager of community, property and places Sarah O’Hagan said a council contractor came to the site and cleared the branches off of the road.

A police spokesperson said police responded to a one-vehicle crash on Liverpool Street, near Victoria Ave around 8.40am.

The road was partially blocked while the tree was cleared off the road.

Police said there were no reports of injuries.

O’Hagan said trees in the city were inspected on a three-year cycle and when this was done a contractor checked there was a 4.5m road corridor of clearance in the centre of the road.

There were routes for oversized vehicles within the city’s roading network and Liverpool St was not part of this.
