When you've got to go, you've got to go ... and at least one Wanganui councillor is pushing the line that it's convenient to have the convenience.
Councillor Rob Vinsen has been arguing to have more toilets open around the city, especially early in the morning, saying there are many locals out exercising at that time of day.
Council has been closing the facilities overnight, concerned about vandalism. There are 17 toilets in the city and suburbs and apart from the women's rest in St Hill St, which is open 24/7, all are open from "dawn to dusk".
Last month the Rangiora St toilets were subjected to what council officers said was "significant and repeated vandalism" but police had apparently caught the offender.
Rowan McGregor, council's property manager, told the operations and reporting committee that closing the toilets overnight had "substantially reduced the level of vandalism".
