Closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in Victoria Ave have helped reduce and solve crime, the Wanganui District Council's Community Committee heard yesterday.
The camera installations are a partnership between council and police, where the council owns and maintains the cameras and police operate them and use them in their work.
A report to council said the busiest intersections were Guyton St and Victoria Ave and Guyton St near the Grand Hotel.
Community development manager Rosemary Hovey said 10 cameras operated and there were plans to extend the surveillance area up Victoria Ave toward Glasgow St.
Sergeant Kevin Smith, of Wanganui police, said three significant crime inquiries in recent months had been assisted by the cameras.
Cr Randhir Dahya said Wanganui was lucky council and police enjoyed a good working relationship. "Other centres have tried our model but none have been as successful," he said.
Surveys in 2000, 2001 and 2002 showed the community's perception of safety and security in the CBD had increased after the installation of the cameras. The council's yearly operational cost for maintenance and software is $13,000. ? PA
