Better late than never ... even when it is very late.
The Mangaweka Bridge will officially open tomorrow more than 110 years after it was first used.
A sub-group of Heritage Mangaweka have been planning the celebrations for a number of years after discovering it had never been officially opened.
"We found records of the plan to open it," Heritage Mangaweka president Alison Dorrian said.
The 1904 opening was to coincide with the opening of the railway in to Taihape but bad weather halted the travel of a delegation, including premier Richard Seddon, from Wellington. The railway was eventually opened later that year but there is no evidence the bridge ever had its day.
