The Champion of Champion series started at the weekend for Bowls Wanganui Inc, with eight titles being decided.

During the season, each Whanganui region club plays their own competition to determine who is their champion, and then those successful players go forward to face the other club champions.

The Open Singles, Open Pairs, Academy Singles and Academy Pairs were on the line over the weekend.

The singles were hosted by the Wanganui East BC on Saturday, while the pairs were hosted at Gonville BC on Sunday.

In the Men's Open Singles semifinals, Wanganui BC's Allen Springer defeated Laird Park's Danny Wildermoth 21-11, while Marton's Chance Hausman bt St Johns 21-15.

The Women's Open Singles was arguably the tightest competition of the weekend, with all the matches being won by no more than two shots.

Laird Park's Elizabeth Anderson beat Wanganui's Wendy Stuthridge 21-19, while Wanganui East's Maria Klitscher held off Aramoho's Reen Stratford 21-20 in the other.

Klitscher won the final 21-19.

The Academy events are open to players who have eight years or less experience, giving them the chance to compete on an even playing field with their peers.

In the Women's Singles semifinals, Wanganui's Denise Taylor beat Wanganui East's Sue Jermy 21-8, while Laird Park's Jenny Redshaw defeated Durie Hill's Jess Power 21-17.

Taylor completed a dominant tournament by winning the final 21-7.

The Men's Singles saw Wanganui's Anthony Hanna beat Durie Hill's Danny Collins 21-6 in one semifinal, while Aramoho's Russell Terrey claimed the other with a 21-13 win over Wanganui East's Wayne Vincent.

It was a close final, with Hanna getting through 21-18.

The pairs tournaments then took centre stage on Sunday at Gonville BC.

Despite the scorelines, the Women's Open Pairs the semifinals were closely contested.
Wanganui BC's Dianne Patterson and Lesley Bourke defeated the home team of Beti Broome and Esther Nuku 22-7.

In the other semifinal, the Aramoho pair of Reen Stratford and Jill Rohloff eased past Wanganui East's Klitscher and Joan Raymond 16-6.

A very closely fought final saw Aramoho win 17-16 after a matchup that ebbed and flowed, with Aramoho taking a two shot lead into the final end, with Wanganui getting one more shot to close the gap.

There was another thriller in the Men's Open Pairs, as the Wanganui team of Kevin Burney and Allen Springer came from eight shots down to score a two on the final end and force an extra end against Laird Park's Ray Hutchison and Graeme Young.

Laird Park were unable to score, so Wanganui advanced to the final, where they would meet Gonville's John Reyland and Robbie Aitken, who had beaten Hunterville's Ken Mason and Paul Petersen 23-5.

Starting at 5pm, Wanganui got out to an early lead, but Gonville ultimately proved too strong, winning 29-12.

The Women's Academy Pairs saw Aramoho's Jackie Ragan and Gayleen Reid win their semifinal against Wanganui East's Maureen Conwell and Ann Morgan 16-14, while in the other game, Wanganui's Debbie Wildermoth and Karen Hunt won through against Laird Park's Jenny Redshaw and Shirley Dollimore 24-5.

It was another close final, levelled 17-17 after the regular 18 ends, and Aramoho got the winning shot in the extra end to take the title 18-17.

Aramoho would also win the Men's Academy Pairs, as the team of Russell Terrey and John Messant won their semifinal against Wanganui's Mike O'Leary and Laurie Hunt 15-8.
