THE body found in the Whanganui River on Friday has been identified as that of a 25 year-old local man, but Wanganui Police would not release his name yesterday.
In a statement, Detective Sergeant Gwynne Pennell said an inquiry into the man's movements leading up to his disappearance was continuing.
His next of kin had been advised and referred to Victim Support, she said.
Ms Pennell said police were grateful for the public response, but might still require further assistance as new details from the investigation emerged.
The Wanganui Chronicle could not speak to Ms Pennell yesterday.
It was unclear yesterday whether a rahui had been placed on the Whanganui River following the man's death.
