Police will have a big presence in Waverley today for the pre-season rugby clash between the Hurricanes and the Crusaders.
Two booze bus units from Palmerston North and New Plymouth will be on hand to ensure sober drivers are behind the wheel and more officers will be at the Dallison Park rugby ground and patrolling the town.
"We encourage local residents to ensure their homes are locked and secure while at the rugby," Senior Sergeant Andrew McDonald of the Whanganui police said.
Police were not expecting trouble but were being cautious in case would-be burglars took advantage of unattended homes.
Likewise those travelling to the game should leave valuables at home or take them into the ground, and cars should be locked, he said.
