Social Development Minister Paula Bennett will visit Wanganui within the next few weeks after a homicide investigation was launched following the death of a baby girl in the city last week.
Earlier this month, Wanganui District Council was informed that Ms Bennett would not be able to attend a community meeting to promote the Green Paper for Vulnerable Children, which was due to take place later this month or early in February.
The discussion document outlines ideas on how New Zealand can better protect abused, neglected and disadvantaged children.
However, a spokeswoman for Ms Bennett yesterday confirmed the minister will visit Wanganui and meet relevant agencies in the city within the next few weeks, although a specific date for the visit is yet to be scheduled.
She said all fatal, non-accidental injuries to children were hugely concerning, and the death of 2-month-old Hinekawa Topia last Thursday following a head injury had certainly "enhanced the impetus" for Ms Bennett to visit the city, although it was something she was planning to do anyway.
