Whanganui junior cricket and rugby representative Hunter Morrison has expanded his repertoire to basketball and into the colours of his neighbouring province.

The 193cm tall 16-year-old has been selected for the Manawatu Under 17 basketball side to attend the national tournament in Auckland this July.

As the only Whanganui player to trial for the Junior Jets, Morrison attended two of the three trial weekends at the Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North.

His father Drew Morrison said Hunter had to hastily leave a Whanganui Under 16 cricket practice game with Manawatu in order to make the last trial.

The teenager impressed the selectors, being picked for the 12-player squad out of the 40 trialists.

"He'll need to balance his other sport commitments over the next five weeks as his practices begin this Sunday," said Drew Morrison.

Morrison may have to miss Collegiate's last interschool cricket fixture against St Peters in Hamilton, because the following week he will be travelling with the WCS 1st XV to Sydney for their preseason tour.

In 2018, Morrison captained the Whanganui Under 17 basketball representative team, and was also chosen for the Whanganui Under 17 rugby squad.

This summer he has been part of the unbeaten Whanganui Under 17 cricket side.
