A baby has been taken to Whanganui Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation in a car fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called to the fire in Whanganui East around 10am today.

A Fenz spokeswoman said the fire was out on arrival and crews helped the people in the car.

"One baby was transported to Whanganui Hospital with smoke inhalation."

A St John spokeswoman said the baby was in a moderate condition.
