Wanganui Potters' Society will host their annual Art in the Garden event this weekend.

Once again, Frances Taylor will open her Quality Trees Nursery in Papaiti Rd after the venue was so successful last year.

"Frances' place provided a beautiful setting for Art in the Garden last year and the place has recovered beautifully since it was badly flooded three years ago," says Pat Townsend.

Potters' Society members will be giving demonstrations on how to work with and firing using the raku method.

Art in the Garden will also feature a range of outdoor art and craft including wooden furniture, painted artwork, mosaics, pallet craft and sculptures.

The society held their AGM in August and voted to change their name to Whanganui Potters' Studio.

"We decided it was time to move into the 21st century and we have a lot of new members.

"We are up to around 90."

Townsend said it has been a good year for the group with a number of significant events on the calendar.

They participated in Artists Open Studios for the first time this year and held a number of successful workshops, including a weekend-long symposium on wheel and hand building with Ivan Vostinar.

The annual exhibition at Whanganui Community Arts Gallery included works by guest artist Fiona Tunnicliffe, who also tutored a number of workshops.

Regular workshops for potters of all abilities are held at the Taupō Quay studio and more information can be found on the Wanganui Potters Society Inc Facebook page.
