On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 96 years ago the guns of World War I fell silent and yesterday Wanganui people gathered in Queens Park to remember.
That day and time in 1918 marked the signing of an armistice between the Allied powers and Germany marking an end of the Great War.
The 1914-18 war claimed about 20 million lives, at least 9million of them service people. As a nation, New Zealand paid a huge sacrifice. At Gallipoli alone 2071 Kiwis died.
And while our remembrance focuses on Anzac Day, Armistice Day still resonates with the armed forces. A small number of them gathered at the cenotaph on Queens Park, some laying wreaths representing several branches of the services.
Wreaths bore inscriptions of the Vietnam veterans, K Force, the Merchant Marine, Malayan veterans and the King's Empire veterans.
