Armed offenders squad are on the scene of an incident at Lewis Ave in Aramoho.

Armed offenders officers were called to Lewis Ave in Whanganui after reports of a person carrying a firearm.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said "we were sitting at the bus stop and saw heaps of cop cars coming down here so we thought we'd come and have a look".

"[I heard] somebody's running around with a gun. There's seven armed offenders, three dogs and four other officers," the witness said.

A police spokesperson said: "Police received a report of a person with what the informant believed to be a firearm on a private property".

"The AOS attended and cleared the property but no person or firearm has been located.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Police have since left the scene and the road is open.

Police were called to the scene just before 4pm.
