A touch of fun for Whanganui whanau

It is all about whanau for the team with the best T-shirts competing in the Masters' Games touch competitions at Springvale Park on Saturday.

"We are all related and we are all from Whanganui," said team captain Mel Peina-Haerewa.

Some members of Rel8nsumway live in Wellington but they all get together to compete in the Whanganui Masters' Games every two years and Captain Mel said this will be the fourth time they have competed as a team.

"A lot of us will be competing in other events at the games but we always have a touch team so we can all play together," she said.

"We always have so much fun at the Masters.

"We don't go to the Dunedin ones because it is about celebrating us all being together in Whanganui."

Coordinator for Masters' Games touch, Sean Brown said Rel8dinsumway won their final game in the mixed team category and other Whanganui teams excelled.

"Numbers were down this year and most of the 10 teams that competed won medals," he said.

"We did have teams from New Plymouth and Kapiti competing but the day really belonged to a couple of Whanganui teams."

Mr Brown said the most notable teams were club team GoK (Gentlemen of Kaierau) and The Brothers team who plan to compete at the World Masters' Games.
