"And that was plenty. We're not as young as we used to be so ... any more would have been too strenuous on us older boys."
The reunion started at 1pm with a game between the Patea Rugby Club third grade team and Opunake's Coastal. Patea won won 29-17.
The club had two All Blacks - Murray Wills and Alistair Scown, he said.
Mr Gibbs said having Toyota GrassRoots TV show filming the match was an added bonus. Toyota GrassRoots is a 21-week series covering the club rugby season and features rugby matches and stories from some of the 600 rugby clubs throughout New Zealand.
The Patea/Coastal match was expected to be screened in about two weeks on Sky Sport 1, Rugby Channel and Prime Television, Mr Gibbs said.
After the match there were speeches and a dinner at the Murray Wills Sports Club Trust Hall, named after the former All Black now Taranaki Rugby vice-president.
Mr Wills spoke at the dinner and said how thrilled he was with the turn-out.
On the Saturday the men turned out to the Patea Golf Club for a barbecue, and a round of golf.
The 18-hole links course sits on cliffs overlooking the Tasman Sea.
"It's a beautiful course with ocean and mountain views. It has a special character and is lovely to play on," Mr Gibbs said.
And that's where the reunion ended, he said with most men leaving to go their own ways at about 2pm.
Mr Gibbs laughed when he said some bright spark had suggested the reunion had been so good there should be another one in another 40 years.
"Well that would be something. I'd be 110, the others would all be 100 or more, so I don't think so.
"We've had a good one over Easter, it was really well worth it."
