More than $31 million in funding for Maori secondary school student achievement will be rolled out over the next three years, the Government has announced.
The funding will be part of the new Building on Success programme and will support school leaders and teachers in the delivery of the curriculum, Education Minister Hekia Parata said yesterday at the Iwi Chairs Forum in Gisborne.
She said: "Building on Success combines the best from Te Kotahitanga and He Kakano, as well as other initiatives such as Starpath, and secondary literacy and numeracy programmes, to deliver a more integrated package in schools of culturally responsive leadership, teaching and learning practices.
"Distilling these programmes into a comprehensive package and extending their benefits to more schools is expected to significantly raise achievement for young Maori."
While 61 per cent of Maori 18-year-olds gained an NCEA Level 2 or equivalent qualification last year - up nearly 4 per cent on the previous year - more needed to be done for Maori to reach the Government's achievement target of 85 per cent, she said. APNZ
